Wailoaloa Beach Accommodation

All Prices On This Page Are FJ$, Unless Otherwise Stated.

Ten minutes from Nadi town or the airport, is Wailoaloa beach. This is a mecca for the younger backpacking tourists that just want somewhere safe and cheap to sleep at night, and reasonably priced food and drinks. Wailoaloa beach area does an extremely good job of catering to that type of tourist..

Happiness is: sitting in the shade on a hot day, with an icy cold bottle of beer. FIJI GOLD stubby, fj$6

Beachfront Accommodation At Wailoaloa

There are a number of backpacker style properties along the beachfront, the two best in our opinion are Smugglers Cove and Aquarius on the Beach. They are also the most expensive of the budget type accommodation, but you tend to get what you pay for. Still very reasonable rates though. There is also the 4 star high rise Ramada apartments (run by Hilton), but with rates starting at about FJ$450 and upwards, it is a little out of the price range for most people staying in this area.

A Quick Walk Around Wailoaloa Beach

Smugglers Cove and Aquarius on the Beach are flanked at either end by the cheaper hostel type accommodation. Tropic of Capricorn at the south (not to be confused with the Capricorn Hotel in Martinar), Bamboo Travellers to the north.

Beach Escape

Menu prices are very reasonable
Menu prices are very reasonable

100 meters or so back from the beachfront is a place called Beach Escape Resort. I'm unsure why they class themselves as a resort as they are just typical low end budget accommodation. They have new Chinese owners, so when I called in they were in the process of making changes and were unable to give me room prices. While it's a little run down, at least the food prices looked to be good.

Do we recommend it? Not at this stage, we will wait and see if the new owners make any significant improvements to the property.

FYI, they did say to me that they would charge the same rate as shown on Booking.com, but reduce that amount for longer stays. The lowest rate for a private room on that website is currently AU$47 for a double room, shared bathroom. That is approximately FJ$70. This could be a good choice for those that don't want to be sharing a dorm at the beachside places. An optional breakfast is AU$7.

Tropic of Capricorn

Tropic of Capricorn

Recommended? Not at this time. Judgement is reserved for now but the outside is fairly unappealing.

However, I will say that when I read a recent (June 7th 2019) Trip Advisor review with the heading…

“WARNING!!! GIRLS BE CAREFUL!!! STAFF IS LOOKING UNDER THE SHOWER DOOR WHILE YOU ARE HAVING SHOWER NAKED!!!” then I find it difficult to recommend this property.

While this is the actions of one employee, it reflects badly on the whole place. The fact that the establishment seemed reluctant to take the matter further and were unhelpful makes things worse.
