The Palms Apartments

While the Palms is officially rated as 3 star

, it is cleaner, more luxurious, more modern and well maintained than some of the 5 star resorts in the region. This place proves that you can't allow a rating system like that to be the sole criteria for choosing your accommodation.

Not too big, not too small, The Palms has 28 self contained apartments from one to three bedrooms, and ten studio guest rooms.

The Rooms

All too often, the website photos of hotel rooms bear little resemblance to real life. Carefully chosen and photo-shopped, they are naturally picked to present the room in the best possible light. This can sometimes lead to disappointment at check in time.

But in this case, the website photos are not only a good representation, they possiblyy don't do the place justice.

Photos don't show the little things, like dust on the top of ceiling fans, doors that don't close properly, that cracked bathroom tile that has mould growing in it, or hard lumpy mattresses. The Palms has none of these, the place is spotless and exceptionally well maintained (some 5 star resorts could take a lesson). As this was only opened a few years ago (2016), it has very little in the way of "wear and tear".

Apartments

  • Master Bedroom: This has an en-suite, king sized bed, and flat screen TV
  • Bathroom: Choice of standard or rain head showers, and separate bath. Good water pressure
  • Living Room: Plenty of space, with a large flat screen T.V and Bose surround sound sound. Very nice!
  • Kitchen: Everything you need to be self sufficient with meals – fridge/freezer, oven, dishwasher, large island breakfast bar, plenty of bench and cupboard space, utensils etc
  • Laundry: Auto washing machine and dryer (in apartments only, not in the guest rooms)
  • Balcony: Each apartment has a private balcony opening up from the living area, with table and chairs. Overlooks the Denarau shopping precinct

Guest Rooms

For the more budget conscious, and those that don't need laundry facilities, the guest rooms make a great alternative to the larger apartments.

These are in a studio layout with two queen beds. No laundry or kitchen, but there is a very good cafe onsite (Cafe O) and more than a dozen restaurants and cafes within a 2 minute walk.

Facilities

  • Good onsite cafe that is open for breakfast, then open again from lunch until late
  • Small but well equipped gym and showers
  • Pool at the front. Smaller size, but has privacy from the road
  • Babysitter is available if you want a night out

Overall Thoughts

Would we stay here? Absolutely. In fact we would choose The Palms over most of the 5 star resorts at Denarau. While it's true that this is not a resort (no kids club, organised activities, entertainment, or multiple restaurants to choose from), that's just fine with us!

Location: The closest accommodation to the port and shopping centre. This can either be a pro or a con, depending on your point of view. A pro for those that want a quick easy walk to the shops, restaurants, and wharf at the Denarau precinct. No other accommodation is closer than this. But the drawback to this proximity is some traffic noise from the road in front.

Room Rates: This starts at FJ$440 per night in the guest room studios. Prices are very competitive with other Denarau accommodation, especially when you consider that you can self cater in the apartments. That alone makes for a huge saving. When you also consider that you don't need to pay for laundry services, and 2 families can share the two and three bedroom units, the prices begin to look more than reasonable.

Suitable for kids? The Palms have plenty of families staying here, people that want the extra space and self catering options that may not be offered at a resort. While there is no kids club or organised activities on site, those are only a short walk or five minute bula bus ride away! Just down the road is the water park, and there is a swimming pool at the front. And of course the kids will appreciate having a separate TV in their bedroom so they can watch what they want. A baby sitter can also be arranged for those times that you want a night out for a romantic dinner.
